Ripple CLO wants to break the ‘crypto bro’ stereotype

Ripple’s Chief Legal Officer and National Cryptocurrency Association President opens up about crypto’s real users, Ripple’s legal victory, and why the new voice of NCA might be a need rather than a want.

In an exclusive interview with TheStreet, Stuart Alderoty says the biggest misconception in crypto today is not about price or regulation but about people. Alderoty, who is also the President of the newly launched National Cryptocurrency Association (NCA), said,

“We’ve all heard of the “crypto bro” stereotype – the misperception that crypto is only for certain people or that its only utility is investing. The reality is that crypto does not have a type”, he says.

After over seven months in stealth mode, NCA works as a nonprofit educational initiative launched to combat misinformation, provide valuable resources, and serve as a way to help everyday crypto users.

Partly funded by Ripple, the organization operates as a completely standalone, said Alderoty, focused on moving public conversation about digital assets into a new direction.

“One in five U.S. adults now use crypto,” he notes, referencing the NCA research. “More people over the age of 55 use crypto than those under 25, and nearly one-third of all American crypto holders are women. Crypto holders are more likely to work in construction (12%) than finance (7%), and many do not belong to higher income brackets, with 26% of crypto-owning households earning less than $75K/year.”

When asked why now, he said the time appeared to be right to fill an increasingly apparent vacuum in the American crypto ecosystem.

He added, “We’re excited to be giving a voice to the real people and businesses using crypto today and hope that their stories inspire and inform others who may be curious about crypto but don’t know where to start. We understand why people have been confused or even skeptical as there hasn’t been a central resource for credible, easy-to-understand information on crypto – until now.”

“The NCA is not involved in regulation or legislation, nor are we a lobbying or advocacy organization – we are laser-focused on supporting consumers directly through awareness and education,” he clarifies, “that said, based on our findings, we anticipate that crypto adoption and usage will continue to increase across the country

When asked about his major role in bringing Ripple’s win, he says, “My experience as Ripple’s CLO has given me a unique view into the obstacles facing crypto holders in America and the need for an organization like the NCA to help people navigate the evolving landscape, and I will continue to wear both hats in service of enabling safe and responsible crypto usage.”

As for legacy, he says, “While Ripple’s chapter with the SEC is closed and we are proud of that victory, the quest for fair and transparent crypto regulation is not yet over. The case set a landmark legal precedent for the entire crypto industry and there is immense opportunity ahead, especially in the US as 73% of holders believe it’s important for the US to become the global leader in space and nearly two-thirds (64%) support government regulation of crypto. As new laws and policies come to pass, the NCA will be here to help everyday Americans make sense of what it means for them.
