OpenAI chief Sam Altman has declared that humanity has crossed into the era of artificial superintelligence—and there’s no turning back.“We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started,” Altman states. “Humanity is close to building digital superintelligence, and at least so far it’s much less weird than it seems like it should be.”The lack of visible signs – robots aren’t yet wandering our high streets, disease remains unconquered – masks what Altman characterises as a profound transformation already underway. Behind closed doors at tech firms like his own, systems are emerging that can outmatch general human intellect.“In some big…

French AI lab Mistral is getting into the reasoning AI model game. On Tuesday morning, Mistral announced Magistral, its first family of reasoning models. Like other reasoning models — e.g. OpenAI’s o3 and Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro — Magistral works through problems step-by-step for improved consistency and reliability across topics such as math and physics. Magistral comes in two flavors: Magistral Small and Magistral Medium. Magistral Small is 24 billion parameters in size, and is available for download from the AI dev platform Hugging Face under a permissive Apache 2.0 license. (Parameters are the internal components of a model that…

First Solar is now the “only game in town” thanks to the likely passage of legislation by the Senate designed to disrupt the supply chains of the renewable energy industry, according to Jefferies. Jefferies upgraded First Solar to buy from hold, with a stock price target of $192, up from $157 previously, implying nearly 17% upside from Tuesday’s close of $164.62 shares. The Senate appears likely to pass legislation that would quickly phase out Inflation Reduction Act tax credits for clean energy companies that receive “material assistance” from some foreign suppliers. At the end of the WWDC 2025 keynote address on Monday, the company literally sang its praises to app developers, as singer-songwriter Allen Stone humorously turned customers’ positive App Store reviews into song lyrics for a tune titled “6 out of 5 stars.” “Best app I’ve ever set my sorry eyes upon,” he crooned. “This is not an app. It’s a piece of art.” What Apple didn’t mention, however, was anything related to the tumultuous past few years for its developer community, or more broadly, why its developers should continue to put their trust in a company that’s fighting them…

Apple has announced updates to the AI models that power its suite of Apple Intelligence features across iOS, macOS, and more. But according to the company’s own benchmarks, the models underperform older models from rival tech firms, including OpenAI. Apple said in a blog post Monday that human testers rated the quality of text generated by its newest “Apple On-Device” model — which runs offline on products, including the iPhone — “comparably” to, but not better than, text from similarly sized Google and Alibaba models. Meanwhile, those same testers rated Apple’s more capable new model, which is called “Apple Server”…
