Ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati’s new AI venture, Thinking Machines Lab, has gained two new prominent advisers: Bob McGrew, previously OpenAI’s chief research officer, and Alec Radford, a former OpenAI researcher behind many of the company’s more transformative innovations. Thinking Machines Lab’s website was quietly updated with McGrew and Radford’s names sometime in March. A spokesperson for the startup didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. McGrew joined OpenAI as a member of the technical staff in 2017 and was promoted to VP of research in 2018 before assuming the role of chief research officer. He left in September 2024,…
Microsoft said it is “slowing or pausing” some of its data center construction, including a $1 billion project in Ohio, the latest sign that the demand for artificial intelligence technology that drove a massive infrastructure expansion might not need quite as many powerful computers as expected. The tech giant confirmed this week that it is halting early-stage projects on rural land it owns in central Ohio’s Licking County, outside of Columbus, and will reserve two of the three sites for farmland.“In recent years, demand for our cloud and AI services grew more than we could have ever anticipated and to meet…
The cryptocurrency market has struggled to maintain its earlier momentum as President Donald Trump’s tariffs continue to weigh on the broader market, with all three major indexes retreating sharply from their earlier highs. Among the cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin (BTC) has particularly taken the biggest hit, with its price plunging sharply from its all-time high. Bitcoin was hovering around $77,750 on Tuesday night after falling as low as $74,000 a day earlier. Understandably, the recent decline is a result of Trump’s tariff policies and regulatory ambiguity. However, Bitcoin still has a lot of potential and the rally is expected to resume once…

By Ariba Shahid ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistan plans to allocate part of its surplus electricity to Bitcoin mining and AI data centres, the head of Pakistan’s Crypto Council and adviser to the finance minister said on Wednesday, adding it had held talks with several mining firms. Pakistan’s energy sector is grappling with challenges, including high electricity tariffs and surplus generation capacity. The rapid expansion of solar energy has further complicated the landscape, as more consumers turn to alternative energy sources to mitigate high costs. Bilal Bin Saqib, chief executive officer of the council, told Reuters the location of the mining…
Waymo may use interior camera data to train generative AI models, but riders will be able to opt out
Waymo is preparing to use data from its robotaxis, including video from interior cameras tied to rider identities, to train generative AI models, according to an unreleased version of its privacy policy found by researcher Jane Manchun Wong, raising fresh questions about how much of a rider’s behavior inside autonomous vehicles could be repurposed for AI training. The draft language also reveals Waymo may also share rider data to personalize ads. This isn’t new; Waymo already collects personal data to improve services and for advertising purposes, per its existing privacy policy. What will change when this feature is released is…
WASHINGTON (AP) — Thanks to a mouse watching clips from “The Matrix,” scientists have created the largest functional map of a brain to date – a diagram of the wiring connecting 84,000 neurons as they fire off messages.Using a piece of that mouse’s brain about the size of a poppy seed, the researchers identified those neurons and traced how they communicated via branch-like fibers through a surprising 500 million junctions called synapses. The massive dataset, published Wednesday by the journal Nature, marks a step toward unraveling the mystery of how our brains work. The data, assembled in a 3D reconstruction colored…
AI is driving a new revolution across a number of industries and the supply chain is no exception. AI has been the most transformative technology of the decade, and it’s no secret it has helped supply chains become more efficient, resilient, and responsive, while allowing organisations to become more efficient and ensuring workforces to focus on more strategic growth. However despite the benefits of the technology, many businesses are slow to adopt the technology, with recent statistics showing only one in ten of SME’s regularly use AI technology, indicating companies and employees are still not operating at their full potential, thus missing…
