SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A Canadian company announced Tuesday that its U.S. subsidiary submitted applications to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to mine the seafloor, sparking outrage by bypassing a U.N. agency that regulates deep international waters. The Metals Company said it was seeking two exploration licenses and a commercial recovery permit, marking the first time a company applies to commercially mine the seabed. The filing is expected to spark a complex legal battle since the Jamaica-based International Seabed Authority, a U.N. agency that regulates international deep-sea waters, has the power to authorize exploitation permits.“Any commercial exploitation outside of…
(Bloomberg) — Bitcoin has surged past gold and tech stocks alike in April, rekindling the debate over whether the largest cryptocurrency serves as a refuge from market turmoil such as the strife triggered by sweeping US tariffs. Most Read from Bloomberg President Donald Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs on April 2 — what he referred to as “Liberation Day” — sent shockwaves across global markets. The Nasdaq Composite is down 0.2% since the day before, while the Bloomberg Dollar Index slipped around 4%. Gold, a go-to refuge in periods of uncertainty, rallied to a record high of $3,500 an ounce…
Supporting early-stage entrepreneurs seems to be suddenly in vogue in Europe. Back in March, podcaster and venture investor Harry Stebbings launched “Project Europe” to great fanfare, aiming to back founders aged 25 and under with a small $10 million fund — riffing on the ‘Peter Thiel Fellowship’ model of yore. Now, a new fund hopes to go one better, this time with $68 million. EWOR (short for “entrepreneurship without risk”) has launched its own “founder fellowship,” committing €60 million. The fund will offer selected founders €500,000 in capital for a 7% stake (in comparison, Project Europe offers €200,000 for a 6.66%…
If you’ve ever tried to get your cybersecurity news picked up by media outlets, you’ll know just how much of a challenge (and how disheartening) it can be. You pour hours into what you think is an excellent announcement about your new security tool, threat research, or vulnerability discovery, only to watch it disappear into journalists’ overflowing inboxes without a trace. The cyber PR space is brutally competitive. Reporters at top publications receive tens, if not hundreds, of pitches each day, and they have no choice but to be highly selective about which releases they choose to cover and which…

In a bid to broaden its user base in India, Reddit has updated its machine translation feature to support the automatic translation of posts and comments into Hindi. “With this expansion, authentic, more people-powered content is now accessible in one of India’s most spoken languages,” the company wrote in an update to a blog post. Reddit said it would add support for Bengali soon as well. Reddit started testing the site-wide machine translation feature last May, beginning with French. In September, the company launched the feature in more than 35 countries, and added support for Spanish and Portuguese. Earlier this…
Viant Technology (DSP), an ad tech company, could unlock significant shareholder value by adopting a bitcoin (BTC) treasury strategy according to Eric Semler, the chairman of Semler Scientific (SMLR), the scientific-equipment maker that also adopted a bitcoin-buying policy. Viant joins Zoom Communications (ZOOM) and Coursera, Inc. (COUR) on Semler’s list of “Zombie Zone” companies that, he says, have untapped capital and an urgent need to rethink strategic direction. Neither of the previous two followed his advice. In a post on X, Semler highlighted Viant’s stock performance as a key indicator of investor skepticism toward the company’s long-term growth prospects. The…

Tapping into innovations in eye-tracking and liquid crystal lens technology, IXI is building low-power glasses that will invisibly and automatically adjust to account for a wearer’s presbyopia (far-sightedness). Four years into its life, Helsinki-based IXI emerged from stealth on Tuesday, announcing that it’s raised a total of $36.5 million from a list of investors that include the Amazon Alexa fund, to work towards its first commercial product. London-based VC firm Plural is leading the latest tranche of Series A…

Redburn Atlantic recommended Tuesday that investors sell their Tesla stock, as the research firm expects another year of volume declines and strained cashflow. “Our challenging earnings outlook incorporates headwinds from electric vehicle (EV) pricing, Mexico-US and China-Europe tariffs,” Redburn analyst Adrian Yanoshik told clients in a note. Redburn’s estimates for Tesla’s earnings and free cash flow this year are 10% below the Wall Street consensus as the firm sees more downside risk, Yanoshik said. “We note even further risks for downgrades associated with a possible rescinding of US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) clean vehicle credits,” the analyst said.
