When Hannan Happi started thinking about how to solve the AI power crisis, he kept one figure in mind: one cent per kilowatt-hour. “We went through all sorts of configurations and designs,” Happi, co-founder and CEO of Exowatt, told TechCrunch. “They all look different from each other. We tried to learn from every one of them: How do I reduce structural costs? How do I reduce maintenance costs? How do I optimize for this?” After years of brainstorming and building, Exowatt’s first step toward that goal is a simple box the size of a shipping container topped with a clear…
For the last two years, LinkedIn has tried to infuse AI into different parts of its platforms, including ad copies, content creation, personalized digests, hiring assistance, job hunting advice, and learning. The company is now finally adding AI to one of the most-used parts of the site: search. Earlier this year, the company released a job search tool for members in the U.S., allowing them to search for jobs using natural language queries. Now, the company is extending the feature to people search. Users can use queries like “Find me investors in the healthcare sector with FDA experience,” people who…
Google DeepMind shared on Thursday a research preview of SIMA 2, the next generation of its generalist AI agent that integrates the language and reasoning powers of Gemini, Google’s large language model, to move beyond simply following instructions to understanding and interacting with its environment. Like many of DeepMind’s projects, including AlphaFold, the first version of SIMA was trained on hundreds of hours of video game data to learn how to play multiple 3D games like a human, even some games it wasn’t trained on. SIMA 1, unveiled in March 2024, could follow basic instructions across a wide range of…
Tesla is recalling more than 10,000 Powerwall 2 home batteries sold in the U.S. after nearly two dozen confirmed incidents of the units overheating, emitting smoke, or catching fire. The U.S. recall comes just months after Tesla recalled Powerwall 2 batteries in Australia following reports of fires. In the Australian recall, the battery cells inside the Powerwalls were manufactured by an unnamed third-party supplier. Tesla did not immediately reply to a question about which company manufactured the cells covered by the U.S. recall. Altogether, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said five Powerwalls have caught fire, resulting in minor…

Google is adding a new feature to its mobile app that could potentially challenge Pinterest in becoming users’ first stop for inspirational imagery: a dedicated images tab. The company announced on Wednesday it is introducing a new “Images” icon at the bottom of Google’s Search app for iOS and Android devices that will display images personalized to the user’s interests. The images will update daily, Google says, noting the feature would offer users a way to organize their creative ideas, or find visual inspiration for things like planning a trip, hosting a party, decorating your apartment, or discovering new fashion.…
WASHINGTON (AP) — A team of researchers has uncovered what they say is the first reported use of artificial intelligence to direct a hacking campaign in a largely automated fashion. The AI company Anthropic said this week that it disrupted a cyber operation that its researchers linked to the Chinese government. The operation involved the use of an artificial intelligence system to direct the hacking campaigns, which researchers called a disturbing development that could greatly expand the reach of AI-equipped hackers. While concerns about the use of AI to drive cyber operations are not new, what is concerning about the new…
Firefighters performing a safety drill at one of The Boring Company’s construction sites in Las Vegas received burns from chemicals used in the tunnel excavation process, according to a new report from Fortune. Those Clark County firefighters weren’t previously made aware of the potential hazard but were permanently scarred, the report states. Employees working on The Boring Company’s tunnels have also received similar chemical burns. The Boring Company has been digging tunnels in Las Vegas for a few years in an attempt to connect the entire city with a subterranean network that uses Teslas to shuttle people. It’s the first…
According to IBM, the primary barrier holding back enterprise AI isn’t the technology itself but the persistent issue of data silos.Ed Lovely, VP and Chief Data Officer at IBM, describes data silos as the “Achilles’ heel” of modern data strategy. Lovely made the comments following the release of a new study from the IBM Institute for Business Value that found AI is ready to scale, but enterprise data is not.The report, which surveyed 1,700 senior data leaders, found that functional data remains stubbornly isolated. Finance, HR, marketing, and supply chain data all operate in isolation, with no common taxonomy or…
TikTok announced on Thursday that it’s launching “bulletin board,” a new feature that lets brands and creators share public, one-to-many messages to their followers. Bulletin board is essentially TikTok’s own version of Instagram’s broadcast channels feature that launched in 2023. Just like with broadcast channels on Instagram, only the creator of a bulletin board can post messages, and followers are limited to leaving emoji reactions. Bulletin boards support text, image, and video posts. The feature is rolling out to creators who are at least 18 years old and have 50,000 followers. The idea behind the feature is to make it easy…
