Instagram will finally let you rearrange your grid

Instagram announced on Thursday that it will finally allow users to rearrange their grid and is testing a way for users to quietly post to their profile without having the content appear in users’ feeds. The social network is also launching the ability to stream songs from Spotify directly to your Instagram Notes, along with a new initiative to support emerging creators.

Instagram says the ability to rearrange grids has been one of its most frequently requested features. With this update, users will be able to rearrange posts on their profile to customize the appearance of their grid. Up until now, posts on your profile have appeared in chronological order, with pinning a post being the only way to keep older content at the top.

The idea behind the feature is to give users a way to make their grid layout more aesthetically pleasing or to highlight certain content above others.

The announcement doesn’t come as a surprise, as Instagram head Adam Mosseri said back in January that the company was looking to roll out the feature.

It’s worth noting that Instagram was seen developing the feature back in 2022 but ended up shelving the idea for some time. Fast-forward to 2025, and Instagram is now ready to launch the update soon.

As for the ability to quietly post content without broadcasting it to your followers’ feeds, Instagram says it’s testing the feature now and plans to roll it out more broadly soon.

Mosseri wrote in its blog post that “creative expression can feel intimidating, especially when posting something to feed,” which is why it’s introducing the new feature to make it easier for users to share content without having everybody’s eyes on it.

Of course, this feature likely won’t be used by people who want tons of likes on their posts, like creators and celebrities. It’s more for people who are focused on building out their profile without having the pressure to perform.

The feature is somewhat similar to trial reels, an Instagram feature that lets creators test out new content by publishing videos that don’t appear to their followers. Instagram shared on Thursday that 40% of creators posted Reels more often after trying out trial reels, and that of those, 80% saw their Reels reach more non-followers.

Mosseri says that the purpose of the two new creative features announced today is to give users “added flexibility over how and where your content shows up and helps you create and share without added pressure.”

The new Spotify integration allows users to share any song they’re listening to in real time on the streaming service to their Instagram Notes, letting their followers see and check out what kind of music they’re into.

The company also announced that it’s launching Drafts, an initiative that will invest in emerging talent. Through Drafts, Instagram will partner with creators to provide support that may include financial support, connections, co-ideation, collaboration opportunities, and more.

An Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email that Drafts is not a dedicated creator fund and that Instagram will “collaborate closely with creators to provide them with the type of support that best suits the needs of each of their unique creative projects.”
