Threads is nearing X’s daily app users, new data shows

Instagram Threads is close to catching up to top competitor X in terms of mobile app users, according to new data from market intelligence provider Similarweb. In June 2025, Threads’ mobile app for iOS and Android saw 115.1 million daily active users, representing 127.8% year-over-year growth; X reached 132 million daily actives, as its year-over-year growth declined by 15.2%.

By comparison, decentralized social network Bluesky grew a sizable 372.5% year-over-year as of June, but its worldwide daily active users remain a fairly small figure: just 4.1 million daily active users as of June, the firm’s estimates indicate. (In total, Bluesky has over 37 million registered users at this time, its own data shows.)

Bluesky had benefited greatly late last year following the U.S. presidential elections, as users left X in protest of its owner, Elon Musk, becoming closely allied with President Trump. That initial surge began slowing earlier this year. More recently, Bluesky has been on the receiving end of a number of complaints that it’s become too much of a left-leaning echo chamber, which could have pushed some users back to Threads.

While Bluesky still has long-term potential because of how its infrastructure enables a more open, user-configurable form of social networking, the current race now is between Threads and X.

Overall, the new mobile data suggests that Threads could become a more significant competitor for X across iOS and Android, potentially eating up more of the ad dollars, which is Meta’s only monetization strategy for Threads at this time.

However, that competition is only neck and neck on mobile devices, as X has an advantage on the web.

Similarweb found that X’s worldwide daily web visits are well ahead of Threads’, with the former seeing 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide in June 2025, compared with just 6.9 million for Threads.

Here, Threads is only a bit ahead of Bluesky’s 5.3 million average daily web visits.

For Bluesky, the figure likely means casual users are visiting its website to read posts, but may or may not have become engaged enough to download its mobile app. Meta’s Threads has put more of its focus on its mobile app from day one, as it launched before the web app and sees more traction.

In the U.S. market, things look a little different.

Bluesky saw 2.4 million average daily web visits in June from U.S. users, higher than Threads’ 985,200. Of course, X was still the one to beat, with 33.1 million average daily web visits in the U.S.

On mobile, it was a closer competition between Threads and X, with the Meta-owned social network seeing 15.3 million U.S. daily active users on iOS and Android compared with 22.9 million for X. (Bluesky had a much smaller showing, with just 1.1 million U.S. daily actives on mobile, the firm’s date shows.)

Bluesky’s long-term potential, meanwhile, may have less to do with surges of new users who come in protest of another network’s policies and more with its investment in a broader open social ecosystem. Those who go to Bluesky simply because it’s not X may not stay on the app if it doesn’t immediately meet their needs, and they may return to X or move to Threads instead.

Those who go to Bluesky because of the technology it’s building may be more likely to remain to see what it’s able to create over time.

Officially, Threads has 350 million monthly active users, per Meta’s latest earnings report. X, a private company, is no longer required to share metrics publicly. Musk last year claimed that X has 600 million monthly active users, however.
